According to a survey by the Pet Food Association, dogs used to be the most common pet in Japan, but cats are considered to be more commonly owned now since 2014. In 2014, cats surpassed dogs and now there are 1.25 times as many cats as dogs. It seems Japanese are becoming cat people.

Dogs seem to be avoided mainly by young people because of the cost of annual rabies shots and care, and the need to walk them every day.
